Is Lemon Juice a Worthwhile Home Remedy for Your Acne?

By Anna Smithson Hayes

Did you know you can clear up your acne with lemon juice? Why should you try it? Compared with commercial products lemons are downright cheap. You can pick up fresh lemons at your supermarket. You only need one lemon to try it on your acne. Squeeze the juice out and keep it your refrigerator. Second, lemon juice is easy to use. You can apply lemon juice by putting it on a corner of a washcloth.

The last benefit is that it works very well. The alpha hydroxy acid in lemons is known as salicylic acid. Alpha hydroxy acids are what is used in commercial acne treatments. Lemons are a natural source of Vitamin C. It is good for healing acne wounds and scars. Dead skin cells clog pores and cause acne. Lemon juice unclogs these pores.

There are many other acne treatments. I've tried ammonia, which chemically in NH4 and highly reactive. Ammonia is chemically reactive and is good for oils. So I tried it on my acne. It tends to dry the skin and doesn't do a very good job on acne. I've even tried mineral spirits that you would use clean oil based paint brushes. Again, it effectively removed the oils and dried my skin, but didn't do much for acne. Finally I found a solution in lemon juice.

I recommend using lemon juice at night. Nighttime is the best time for lemon juice because of a few simple facts. It is sticky, but that is less likely to bother you while sleeping. Lemon juice may darken the skin when exposed to sunlight. Have you ever seen or heard of lemon juice being used an invisible ink? The writing would only appear when the paper was exposed to heat. You do not want the same reaction when you apply the juice to your face. This is especially true if you want the lemon juice to reduce scarring.

I find that lemon juice does mildly irritate the skin. I am lucky that my skin is not sensitive. However I find it mildly painful to apply lemon juice. Open wounds are especially painful. If you find it too uncomfortable to wear all night, you can wash it off after ten minutes. Stinging the skin is the only side effect I experience. I have heard of it causing redness or rashes in certain people. Apply the juice to small part of skin to see how the skin reacts. You wouldn't want to find out it causes a rash after using it on your entire face.

My experience with lemon juice has been very good. For example, I had a whitehead appear on my cheek. I used lemon juice on the skin and it cleared it up overnight. I have never had such results with anything else.
