Microdermabrasion Crystals And Their Use

By Gwen Lowe

When people age, the regeneration process of the skin starts to slow down substantially. During this process, the skin sheds the dead cells and replaces them with new cells. As this natural process gets slower, the dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of the skin. This can lead to a dullness, blocked pores, and a more pronounced appearance of wrinkles. For these issues, microdermabrasion crystals can be used to remove the accumulated dead skin cells.

Blasting is typically done at a day spa or in the office of a dermatologist. Before the procedure begins, the skin is stimulated by a vacuum to help induce an increase in blood flow and encourage draining of the lymph nodes. There is no other preparation needed before the procedure starts.

This particular procedure, also known as skin blasting, blows a specific type of crystal onto the skin. The blasting removes the built up dead skin cells from the skin. Once the blasting is complete, the crystal material and skin cells are sucked up with a vacuum machine. Newer machines use a wand that delivers the crystals and vacuums at the same time. After the session is finished, the skin is noticeably different, often appearing more youthful and smooth.

Based on what the individual location provides, you may be able to choose the type of crystal that is used. Commonly used and chosen ones are made from aluminum oxide or a baking soda blend. You can also choose one made of salt. Diamond tipped varieties are also a possibility.

Microdermabrasion is an ideal choice for people who have dull, tired looking skin. It is a non-invasive procedure. Many people often choose this type over dermabrasion procedures because there is less recovery time. Skin remains pink for about a day following the procedure, and then you can continue using makeup. Unlike dermabrasion, this procedure does not have the potential to cause discoloring or scarring on darker skin colors. There is also no need for anesthetics because you do not experience the same pain as you would with dermabrasion.

In comparison to dermabrasion and other types of procedures, there are minimal side effects that can be experienced. The epidermis is the only layer that is affected by the procedure, which often causes light sensitivity. Direct sunlight should be avoid and sunscreen should be applied. A tight feeling of the skin and spots of bruising may occur. Many people experience a light peeling of the skin.

Multiple sessions are often required to achieve the best results. Generally, six sessions about two weeks apart is recommended. This will usually depend on the severity of the issue and the results you want to achieve. More sessions are recommended when cases are more severe, while less sessions will be necessary for light cases of build up.

This particular procedure is often preferred by many people, usually because of the minimal side effects, absence of pain, and shortened period of recovery. The added benefit of crystal choices also helps. When you are looking for a location, always be sure to ask about how much experience the person has that will be performing it, and what types of skin issues he or she is familiar with.
