Get Rid of your Adult Acne

By Karen Miseneer

The most common skin condition worldwide, is acne. It predominantly affects teenagers but can also be seen in the older population as well. Caused by Propionibacterium acne and precipitated by certain risk factors, this condition is notorious for flaring up recurrently. Some of the available ways to treat acne will be examined in this article, as well as some helpful techniques that can be done at home.

What is the cause of adult acne?

Sebaceous glands are contained within the skin that secrete sebum, which is a thick and oily material. Skin pores can become clogged with sebum, which traps in bacteria which can flourish inside. As this happens, acne occurs on the skin as a result of the growing bacteria trapped in the pores, causing inflammation. In men, acne occurs due to all production of testosterone and in women it can occur during pregnancy or menopause.

Adult acne treatment methods

Adult acne can be treated in a number of ways, using a wide variety of techniques. The problem is that not every way is as effective as others, and will not work the same on all people. To stop the spread and continuation of acne on the skin, there are some easy ways to begin the process.

1. Over-the-counter cleansing products are one solution that many people try, purchasing these in many retail markets. They clean out the pores and help get rid of sebaceous secretions.

2. Another popular solution is the use of a topical cream with benzoyl peroxide as an active ingredient. Redness can be lessened, and the spread and amount of acne can be brought down effectively. There are some issues with this treatment for certain people, as flaking and itching can be a problem if the skin becomes too dry.

3. Some people benefit from treatments of antibiotics that a dermatologist or physician may prescribe. Lots of people have gotten successful results from a topical antibiotic cream such as clindamycin. Tetracycline is another kind that is prescribed for some patients as an oral medication, in a longer treatment course. Teeth can be stained by the use of tetracyclines though, patients need to be aware of this.

Some effective and simple home remedies

Just keeping the skin clean by washing it with a cleansing soap and warm water can help reduce breakouts. The skin can be dried out by using hot water; this is not good for your skin. Be more careful after washing your face with the towel, do not scrub your face too hard and cause damage, take some care. There are different reasons that people get acne, and it's a good idea to find what triggers it for every individual.

Treatments for more serious acne

These days there are newer treatments that have emerged in the field of dermatology that help manage patients with adult acne. There are lots of treatment processes, including blue light therapy, laser therapy, or chemical peels. Before undergoing any such treatment, the dermatologist will assess whether or not this will be of any benefit in the first place and will initially tryout the above measures first.
