Taking Care of our Skin

By Cristine Sphan

Genetic and environmental factors will cause a lot of wear and tear to your skin throughout your life. But you are never too young or too old to start taking care of your skin. In fact, your health, fitness, and beauty regime should feature skin care and protection.

The first step to taking care of your skin is preventing damage. The skin's condition is degraded by pollutants, sun, wind, and simply aging. Wrinkles, age spots, sagging, and dry and itchy skin are common complaints. To keep your skin looking and feeling its best, here are some steps that you can take:

Exercise, rest, and good nutrition lay the foundation for beautiful, healthy skin, inside and out. A proper diet is not only good for your overall health, it also helps to ensure that your skin will receive all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that it needs to maintain and repair cells. Drinking lots of water is important. Remember that water helps to move waste and nutrients through the system, as well as hydrate the skin.

Shielding your skin from the sun's damaging rays is a vital aspect of skin care. Wrinkles, premature aging, age spots, and cancer can all be a result of damaging ultraviolet radiation. Using sunscreen helps protect your skin from the sun's rays. But don't use too much. Your skin does benefit from some daily sunlight.

As we age, dry skin is even more common. Older skin has fewer sweat and oil glands than younger skin. Frequent baths, certain cosmetics or medications can cause dry skin. If you can, take fewer baths or showers each week, and make sure you use mild soaps. Try using a natural, mild soap that is perfume- and dye-free, when you must lather up. Use moisturizer after the bath. Keep skin healthy by continuing to moisturize throughout the day. Your hands and face may need to be moisturized several times; they are particularly susceptible to daily damage.

Develop a Skin Care Routine

You should develop some kind of skin care routine based on your skin type, daily activities, and nutritional needs so that you can be sure you are taking the very best care of your skin. Having a regular skin care routine will also facilitate close evaluation of abnormalities on your skin.

Develop a customized washing routine for yourself. Wash your skin thoroughly on a daily basis to remove the dirt, debris, pollutants, and perspiration that accumulates on a daily basis. Use only warm water to wash your skin and use a mild natural cleanser every few days, if you have dry or sensitive skin. Be sure to wash with a gentle cleanser on a daily basis if you have normal or oily skin.

Moisturizing is an important part of your washing routine. You will want to use a moisturizer everyday to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, unless your skin is very oily. Both indoor winter heat and summer sun can be equally damaging to your skin, so it needs moisturizer all year long.

Make sure protection is a part of your daily skin program. Again, use a natural sunscreen when possible, regardless of whether or not you plan on spending much time in the sun. The sun's rays are very damaging; you will never be left without protection if you get in the habit of applying sunscreen everyday.
